LECTURE
Today's lecture was very interesting, as it caused us to look at work in a new light, questioning the under layers of the structure of photographs. The study of signs focuses on how meanings are derived from what we are presented with, as well as how reality can be represented.
Saussure discusses how it is possible to take this study and correlate it with our social life, Course In General, Linguistics, 1916 also investigates how the meaning of signs, can be affected by nature and laws of the world, which can be considered a scientific study. Pierce argues that Logic has a major part to play when reading non coded iconic messages, he believes that generally we use our experience & assumptions to make sense of what we; basic scientific intelligence.
The understanding of signs was then condenced into two simple appraoches:
THE SIGNIFER
the material aspect, literal sense, what we see
THE SIGNIFIED
the mental aspect, metaphorical sence, experiances from society & culture

The analyisie of signs was then condensed into three ways:
LINGUISTIC MESSAGE
words that belong to the message, connotations & denotoations
NON CODED ICONIC MESSAGE
denotations, recongisable & identifiable objects, signifier
CODED ICONIC MESSAGE
connatations, layering of meaning in a larger sense in the sign system in society, the signified, depend of external influences ie. experieances, gender, culture
